Course Spotlight: LEGO WeDO

Ages 6-8

The Robotics with Lego WeDo series will immerse young students in the exciting world of robotics and Lego! Using the Lego WeDo education set, students will grasp concepts on building structures, sensors, and gearing. Students will be able to construct science exploration robots, satellites, flood gates, and various animal robots, while learning how these objects work in real life and where the animals live, how they live, and their challenges in the wild. This course will challenge students to think critically and work in a team to solve problems.

BUILD

There are a multitude of projects to choose from various themes such as:

  • Animals
  • Cars and Tools
  • Vehicles and Transportation

Students will follow step-by-step instructions on the iPad that guide them through the build process from start to finish. Kids can work at their own pace and are encouraged to problem solve if they come across a difficult step.

PROGRAM

Once the project has been built, the next step is to program their robot. Using the iPad, students will learn a simplified drag-and-drop programming system to activate sounds and a motor, which might also be dependent on a sensor, in a logical and sequential schema.

REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS

With each project, instructors provided campers with important background knowledge and facts about each item which provided a more holistic experience.

For example, when building the bee project, campers learned about the different types of bees and how they collect pollen from flowers.

Another example, is this earthquake simulation project, where students learn to identify which house structures are the strongest to withstand the force.

SKILLS ACQUIRED

  • Teamwork – whether its asking for help or lending a helping hand, being a team player is an integral part of our classroom experience. Sometimes, students even join forces and combine their robots together!
  • Responsibility – each student receives their own LEGO kit and is responsible for keeping track of all their pieces and also placing each one in their designated spot at the end of each build.
  • Creativity – although there is a set design for each project, sometimes students stretch the boundaries and come up with their very own new creation!
  • Attention to detail – from building, to programming, to taking it apart, students need to keep a close eye on their robots to ensure everything is in the right place and correct order.
  • Problem-solving – sometimes students may come across a difficult step that they have to think through more carefully, or realize that they missed a step or did it incorrectly and have to work backwards to find the solution.

Kidzwhiz LEGO WeDo series is the perfect introduction for children 6-8 into the world of Robotics! We offer camps, weekly courses, and drop-in classes to provide flexibility and accomdate your needs!
